What is Google Earth?
Google Earth is a desktop
mapping application freely distributed for free by
Google. Although the free version of Google Earth
is not a GIS application and hence doesn't provide
geoprocessing functionality, it is a very convenient
way to visualize geographical data.

What is KMZ format?
A KMZ (compressed KLM)
file is a kind of XML document designed to supply
geographic information to Google Earth. Google Earth
loads a KMZ file and maps geographic features on Earth.
All Google Earth versions (including freeware version)
can read KMZ files.
How can I use Intact
Forest Landscapes borders in Google Earth?
1. To use KMZ files you
need to install any version of Google Earth on your
computer.
2. To download KMZ files for your area of interest,
select the location on the map or select the file
from kmz list.
3. Once you have downloaded the KMZ file, you can
click on this file, which will start Google Earth
and load the IFL borders.
4. If you want to open LMZ files manually, start Google
Earth first, and then select Open from the File menu.
Using the file browser, navigate to the folder on
your computer that contains the KMZ file. Select the
file and click the Open button. The dataset appears
in the Temporary Places folder.
What can I see on the
map?
The Intact Forest Landscapes
KMZ files contain the borders of Intact Forest Landscapes
(IFL) areas divided into the regular grid blocks.
After loading KMZ file to Google Earth you will see
IFL borders (white) with satellite image in the background.
You can see and print IFL maps for your local area
and check the accuracy of IFL borders.

How can I mark and send
my comments to the mapping group?
If you find any inaccuracies
or mistakes on the IFL map, mark it and send this
mark with your comments to the Greenpeace mapping
group. Select Placemark from the Add menu, and drag
the new placemark to the desired location. In the
New Placemark dialog you can add Name and Description
for the placemark. Save your placemark by right-clicking
on the placemark name (in My Places folder) and selecting
Save As... from the pop-up menu. Send your KMZ file
with description to the mapping group and we will
check and improve the map.
