Dear colleagues,
The World Intact Forest
Landscapes Map is the first global assessment of intact
forest landscapes based on high-resolution satellite
imagery analysis. As all new products, this world
map may contain some inaccuracies due to lack of information
about the local land use practices and the state of
forests in some regions of the Earth. At the moment
we are in the process of improving the map and we
hope that it might also be helpful to you in your
work. Ideally, the map must be a "living map," being
improved in quality as new data and more sophisticated
sources of information and technologies appear.
In order to improve the
map quality, we ask you to check in detail the borders
of the intact forest landscapes that we identified
in your area of expertise. There are different ways
to review the map, including:
On the basis of raster
map:
You can use low-resolution
countries maps from this website, download the world
IFL map poster (PDF,
2.0 Mb), or
maps in TIFF format. You can put your comments
directly on the pictures or list them in a text file
and send it to the project coordinators ilona.zhuravleva@ru.greenpeace.org.
On the basis of IFL map
in ESRI Shape format:
The ESRI Shape is a data
type used in many Geographic Information Systems software
products. It was originated by ESRI primarily for
use with ArcView GIS. Shapefiles can also be used
in ARC/INFO, ArcGIS and other widely used GIS software.
You could download
the IFL map in ESRI Shape format here.
Using Shapefiles you can see IFL maps for your local
area and overlay IFL polygons with any other GIS data.
You can make your comments as a separate Shapefile
and send it to the project coordinators ilona.zhuravleva@ru.greenpeace.org.
On the basis of IFL map
in Google Earth KMZ format:
Google Earth is a desktop
mapping application freely distributed for free by
Google. Although the free version of Google Earth
is not a GIS application and hence it doesn't provide
geoprocessing functionality, it is a very convenient
way to visualize geographical data. You could download
the IFL map in KMZ format for Google Earth here.
Once you have KMZ file downloaded, you can click on
this file, which will start Google Earth and load
the IFL borders. If you find any inaccuracies or mistakes
on the IFL map, you can mark it and send this mark
with your comments to the Greenpeace mapping group.
Select Placemark from the Add menu, and drag the new
placemark to the desired location. In the New Placemark
dialog you can add Name and Description for the placemark.
Save your placemark by right-clicking on the placemark
name (in My Places folder) and selecting Save As...
from the pop-up menu. Send your KMZ file with a description
to the project coordinators ilona.zhuravleva@ru.greenpeace.org
and we will check and improve the map.
