Global Forest Watch Intact Forest Mapping Results

"The Last Intact Forest Landscapes of Northern European Russia" (Greenpeace and GFW, 2001) - was updated on the base of fresh satellite images

"Remaining Wildlands of the Northern Forests" (GFW, 2002, unreviewed draft) - was used as a reference for mapping Canadian forests and as initial data source for Nordic countries.

"Atlas of Russia's Intact Forest Landscapes" (GFW, 2002) - Northern Siberia and Northern Far East IFL data was incorporated to the final product without changes; Southern Siberia and Far East IFL borders were corrected on the basis of Landsat images.

Satellite images

The largest part of the global forest zone area was mapped using Landsat ETM+ data for the years 1999-2002. The source for this dataset was the Global Land Cover Facility.

Some areas were updated on the basis of recent Landsat images (source - Global Land Cover Facility) or recent IRS, Meteor-3M and ASTER images (provided by Scanex R&D Center).

The data for northern Siberia and the Russian Far East was gathered on the basis of old Russian satellite Resource-O1 for the years 1998-1999. These regions will be updated using Landsat images in the near future.
