A new Greenpeace report "Roadmap to Recovery: The World's Last Intact Forest Landscapes" has been published. Using global intact forest landscape (IFL) maps derived from state of the art mapping technology, Greenpeace today challenged the governments at the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to adopt a unique "Roadmap to Recovery" for the planet. Combining the most up-to-date, high-resolution satellite imagery of the world's forests, Greenpeace has created the most accurate maps of the world's large IFL's. This IFL map provides governments with the opportunity to place remaining large intact forests under moratoria to allow adequate protection before they are destroyed. The current nature of the forest data makes it a useful tool that anyone can use to monitor the health of the world's last forests online. Download the report on Publications page in low- (11.2 Mb) and high-quality (615.4 Mb).

The world map of intact forest landscapes in Google Earth KMZ format is now available for download. Google Earth is a desktop mapping application distributed for free by Google. Although the free version of Google Earth is not a GIS application and hence doesn't provide geoprocessing functionality, it is a very convenient way to visualize geographical data. A KMZ file format was designed to supply geographic information to Google Earth. Google Earth loads a KMZ file and maps geometry features on the earth. All Google Earth versions (including the free version) can read KMZ files.
