Region contains more than 28% of the world's
IFL.
82,3% of all IFL in this region is located
in Canada; 15,8% is located in the USA (mostly in Alaska).
10 countries in the region (St. Lucia,
Dominica, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Trinidad and Tobago,
Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Jamaica, El Salvador) have
lost all their intact forests, while 7 countries (Mexico,
Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Dominican
Republic, Cuba) retain less then 10% of their forest
areas remain as IFL.
7% of intact forest areas are located
in strictly protected areas.
Open forests and non-forest areas
occupy more than 56% of IFL area in the region.
The majority of all IFL in the region
are part of the boreal (taiga) forest biome.
Less then 1% of IFL are in temperate
broadleaf and mixed forests Biome.
